All Things Anesthesia: What to Expect

Undergoing a procedure involving anesthesia can be nerve-wracking, especially for patients new to surgical procedures. As we near the bicentennial of Modern Anesthesia, let’s dive deeper into the experience of this euphoric drug.

Anesthesia will transform you into a sleep-like state, eliminating your body’s ability to identify pain.

As the date of your procedure involving anesthesia nears, here are the essential things you need to know about your impending medical procedure.

Before Your Medical Procedure

Prior to the surgery, meet with your doctor to discuss your health history and address any concerns. It is important to ask the questions you have in mind to reduce any pre-procedure anxieties.

Ask Questions

  • Can I have a guest with me? If so, for how long?
  • How will the anesthesia be administered to me; injection through an IV or with a breathing mask?
  • How long will I be under anesthesia?
  • How long will it take me to wake up after the procedure?
  • When can I return home?
  • How soon after the surgery can I eat and drink?

Follow any specific instructions or recommendations from your doctor, including eating and drinking habits.

The number 1 thing you can do to ensure the best recovery is maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

  • Eliminate drug and alcohol consumption
  • Work out consistently
  • Eat healthier
  • Limit screen time
  • Do things that reduce stress: spend time with family, get outside, read
  • Sleep more

As you fall into the haze of anesthesia, prepare to feel detached from the comfort of reality but know the anesthesia will kick in shortly, ensuring a pain free process.

During Your Procedure Involving Anesthesia

There is not much you can do while under anesthesia, because you’re going to be knocked out. So just sit back and relax!

Throughout the entire procedure, someone from your care team will monitor you. Their main priority is the health and wellbeing of you; monitoring medicines, temperature, breathing, blood pressure, and comfort.

After the Procedure

Once the surgery is complete, it may take a few hours for you to come out of the effects of anesthesia.

Following the surgery, there are an array of symptoms you may experience:

  • Sleepiness/dizziness
  • Nausea/vomiting
  • Sore throat/mild hoarseness
  • Inability to regulate body temperature
  • Muscle aches

Continue to check in with your anesthesiologist following the procedure to ensure the best recovery!
